REVIEW: THE DEMON'S LEXICON by Sarah Rees Brennan

The Demon's Lexicon by Sarah Rees Brennan
Out in stores NOW!!

I have had this book in my possession for quite some time and could not really explain why I have not read it before. Yet, when I knew I was going to meet Sarah a few weeks ago I decided to dive right into it.

REVIEW YYYY

Nick and Alan Ryves are brothers with a some issues. Many years ago before their father was murdered by an magician he made Alan swear to protect his younger brother and mother. A duty that Alan has taken very seriously even if it meant that they had to spend the rest of their lives on the run from the evil forces of magic.

Living on the fringes, always on the run and ready to defend himself is the only thing that Nick knows and was good at. He understands that that the magicians are hunting the Ryves family for a charm that Nick's mother stole -- a charm that keeps her alive -- and they want it badly enough to kill again. So, Nick and Alan try their best to live "normal" lives but they know that it is only a matter of time before they have to pick up and run again. Nick hates this lifestyle because he detests his mother (whom will not look or even get near him) and cannot understand why Alan will not leave their mother behind since she is the reason for all of their troubles. Alan on the other hand is the opposite of Nick, he is kind and attentive and very scholarly, but do not underestimate him. Alan could kill as easily as Nick if he had to, he just does not like to and there is the big difference between the two of them.

Alan and Nick's already somewhat nomadic life becomes further complicated when siblings Jamie and Mae come to them for help. Jamie bears a demon's mark, possessed; a sign of death that almost nothing can erase because the struggle between the human host and the demon is so overly powerful that the host always dies. Mae refuses to believe that her brother will die and despite Nick's outright refusal to become involved, Alan still agrees to help. Unfortunately while trying to help, Alan also gets marked by a demon. This fact sets off Nick who is desperate to save him and will stop at nothing to do so, but the only way to do is to kill one of the magicians they have been hiding from for so long.

As Nick begins to ponder why Alan has put them all in danger he is also uncomfortably aware that his brother might be lying to him about thier past and Nick will stop at nothing until he gets down to the bottom of it, that is IF the magicians do not get to them first.

As I kept reading Demon's Lexicon (and really I could not stop) I was taken aback at how cold and angry Nick was. A factor that was beginning to become a sore spot with me and then as the story unfolded and twisted before my unbelieving eyes I was like WHOA!!! I seriously did not see that coming and was thoroughly pleased at being duped. Brilliant. I enjoyed Sarah's world building and different take on demons that was unique and thrilling to witness. I cannot wait for Sarah's next book in the trilogy, The Demon's Covenant.

When I met Sarah a few weeks ago she was gracious enough to fill us in on what she believes Trilogies are all about.

I have this book borrowed from the library and had a bit of trouble getting through the first two chapters. Everyone says it's so worth it to keep going ... so I will. Thanks for the review. I have until Nov. 4 to return it. I'm determined to read it by then. :)

I would love to see what you have to say :)

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
