Waiting on Wednesday: Tempestuous by Lesley Livingston

Jill over at Breaking the Spine started this and I believe that it's awesome" This blog post is to alert those that visit about "the" book that we cannot wait to get our hands on.

This week I have selected TEMPESTUOUS by Lesley Livingston. I absolutely adore this series and after reading the last book I have been sitting on pins and needles for the next novel and now I have found a crumb that I am greedily feasting on. I know I am pathetic, but hey I love it. I cannot wait for this book due out in december.

Due December 21, 2010

“I don’t love Sonny Flannery.”

With a single lie, seventeen-year-old Kelley manages to protect the boy she loves and send him retreating into a haven for Lost Fae hidden below New York City. If she can figure out who’s after Sonny’s magick and uncover the reason why Janus Guards are being recruited to hunt innocent Faerie, Kelley might stand a chance at getting him back…but not before she must finally confront her own Faerie powers and master them.

The much-anticipated finale of Lesley Livingston’s ravishing trilogy that began with Wondrous Strange and gathered force in Darklight comes to a stormy head. Fans new and old will revel in the lush romance—and be swept away by the chaotic tempest that’s swirled Kelley and Sonny together.

AHHHHH....I sooo cannot wait for this. What is your WOW for this week.

BOOK TRAILERS: What do you think about them?

After I spent a few hours checking out book trailers on Youtube (something I love to do) I ended up with a list of books that I was very interested in. This action made me think about this growing market of book trailers and how it can impact book sales. Book trailers are one of the best visual medias around for promoting books and they are being used more and more often. I personally like watching them and on more than one occasion it has made me purchase a book I would have passed over before. A well made trailer i.e. visually stunning, flows well and follows the storyline is a sure bet with me.

But book trailers can also have a downside, just like un unattractive book cover would be overlooked in a bookstore a poorly made trailer might cause me to overlook that book. Just like going to see the trailers before a movie you will remember the ones that grab your attention and want to see them, the same for a book trailer.

So again my curious mind wants to know:

What do you think about book trailers?

Do they influence your book purchasing habits? or do they hinder them?

What is your favorite trailer? and why?

Frannie Cavanaugh is a good Catholic girl with a bit of a wicked streak. She's spent years keeping everyone at a distance—even her closest friends—and it seems her senior year will be more of the same...until Luc Cain enrolls in her class. No one knows where he came from, but Frannie can't seem to stay away from him. What she doesn't know is that Luc works in Acquisitions—for Hell—and she possesses a unique skill set that has the king of Hell tingling with anticipation. All Luc has to do is get her to sin, and he’s as tempting as they come. Frannie doesn’t stand a chance.

Unfortunately for Luc, Heaven has other plans, and the angel, Gabe, is going to do whatever it takes to make sure that Luc doesn’t get what he came for. And it isn't long before they find themselves fighting for more than just her soul.

But if Luc fails, there will be Hell to pay…for all of them.

REVIEW YYYY

The wolves of Mercy Falls return in this much anticipated sequel, LINGER. A book full of heartbreaking moments, words left unsaid and the cold.

Maggie Stiefvater has a profound way of making the words on the page seize your heart and burrow into your brain so that you are immersed in the moment. Once you begin on course you cannot stop until the last words are consumed and you are left aching.

In LINGER we find Sam struggling with that fact that he is human and will no longer change back to wolf form....but every temperature drop causes his heart to sink in nervous anticipation. Cole, the new wolf created by Beck is hell bent on remaining in his wolf form but his wishes are continually denied. Isabel's efforts at having control are greatly tested as she tries to deal with her brother's death and her only form of escape is Cole. Grace continues to hide the fact that Sam is staying with her at night but it is a secret she cannot maintain for long especially when her health begins to deteriorate. All of these characters impact one another and when the unimaginable happens they will have to rely on each other until the very end.

I could begin with a cavalcade of superlatives, but as time passes I am hard pressed to illicit such intense emotion. It is not to say that I did not enjoy reading LINGER, because I did, but what made me initially fall in love with this series was slightly amiss this time around. While I relished the the dual POV in SHIVER, I found the increased POV's in LINGER distracting. The intimacy that was once shared between Sam and Grace was diminished and it was missed. I did appreciate reading about Cole and his inner struggle for it added a bit of darkness to the storyline that gave it a gritter edge. I could have gone without being inside Isabel's mind, for she is still shallow as ever. Another storyline that I disliked was the sudden interest that Grace's parents had in her well being, not to say that it was not merited but it just seemed out of character after reading SHIVER. I adored the new twist in the storyline and did not see it coming. I only know that I have to know what happens next. What I did admired most about this novel was Maggie's writing style. It is beautiful beyond comprehension and at times I would be bereft of words to explain the ache that was building in my chest. I know that those that have read SHIVER will enjoy LINGER, maybe not to the same extent but will be content.

Now we have to wait another year until FOREVER

SOUNDS ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC!!! RIGHT? COME BACK ON SATURDAY FOR A SNEAK PEEK OF THE FIRST CHAPTER

What genre of book do you prefer to read?

As I am arranging my current TBR pile of books, I noticed that I had an overwhelming amount of novels in the paranormal genre. I admit that my reading preference strongly leans into that category but in the last year I have expanded by horizons and have read books from other genres that I have greatly enjoyed i.e. contemporary fiction. Some of my favorite reads from this year have been in the contemporary genre and so I am dabbling a bit more and finding satisfactory results. The only genre that I have not been able to joyfully indulge in is Sci-Fi novels. I cannot seem to get into them no matter how much I try.

I feel bad about this because I could be missing out on some amazing reads due to my stubbornness, but If I cannot feel passionately about what I am reading, why bother??

So again my curious mind is piqued. What genre does everyone like to read? Also, have you ever read a genre you did not care for but have been pleasantly surprised in reading? and what genre of book do you not care for?

This week I have selected THE OTHER SIDE OF DARK by Sarah Smith. I chose this book because the cover instantly had my attention and the synopsis looks spooky good.

Law Walker knew Katie Mullens before she was crazy. Before her mother died. Law knows Katie’s crazy now, but she’s always been talented. And she keeps filling sketch pads even though her drawings have gone a little crazy as well—dark, bloody. What Law doesn’t know is that these drawings are real. Or were real. Katie draws what she sees—and Katie sees dead people. People who have died—recently, and not so recently—in accidents, from suicide, even a boy who was trapped in a house that burned down more than 100 years ago. And it’s this boy who makes Law want to get to know Katie all over again. So what if his dad doesn’t want him dating a white girl? So what if people think Katie is dangerous? The ghost boy is hiding a secret that Law needs to know—and it’s much bigger, much more shocking than anyone ever expected.

When is it time to say GOODBYE to a series?

~ Think about any attachments that are depleting your emotional reserves. Consider letting them go. ~

I think that quote fits perfectly for the question that I am pondering. When is it time to say GOODBYE to a series? I am asking this because I began to update my reading piles and I noticed that on the top of my TBR pile I had books from two different series that I just cannot seem to pick up and read. It has been months and now other books are coming out and I find that I am indifferent to that fact whereas before both series had me hanging on tender hooks for the next novel.

I sat for a few minutes trying to decipher my feelings and I came up with different conclusions for each series. One became too far-fetched while remaining stagnate, while the other I could not seem to relate or care about the characters anymore. These facts caused me a bit of sadness for I remember how much I enjoyed these series initially, yet somehow along the way I lost interest or it could be that my reading tastes changed and I became more discerning about how I spent my time. Either way I am sitting here with books that I know I am not going to bother with and I wonder if anyone else feels the same way?

REVIEW YYYYY

When I finished NIGHTSHADE I had to close the book and walk away for I was left stunned and filled with a myriad of emotions that I knew I could not accurately articulate into written form. A few days later I am still thinking "WOW!!! that was amazing!" NIGHTSHADE is a fascinating story that had my emotions on an mercurial roller coaster that I would gladly ride again.

With NIGHTSHADE, Andrea Cremer has created an new world that is well detailed and brutal while being conceivable and heartbreaking at the same time. With the first page you are immediately absorbed into its story and cannot stop until you reach the last.

Calla is the upcoming alpha of her Nightshade pack; a long line of lupine guardians slaves that protect The Keepers; a mysterious race with magical abilities. Calla's pack must share their guardianship duties with the Bane pack that is to be led by Ren. A new pack is to form with Calla and Ren's upcoming betrothal, one of which they will be solely in charge of. Yet, being in charge does not mean that they can save their pack members from certain abuse and privileges that the keepers feel that they are entitled to.

One night while on patrol Calla encounters a boy that is being attacked by a bear but instead of letting the boy die, she intervenes and saves his life. Calla knows that she preformed a serious violation against keeper rules but she should not help herself, she was drawn to the boy and did not want to see him perish. At school she encounters the boy again, he is a new transfer student named Shay and the pull that she felt for him before only grows stronger. This matter does not bode well for Shay because Calla is promised to Ren and he will stop at nothing to make sure that they are together. What ensues is a major struggle for Calla, while she feels obligated to Ren and her pack she cannot help what she feels for Shay. Calla is ordered to shadow Shay one night after he is attacked by a searcher and while together a scandalous discovery is made concerning the Keepers and Guardians and Calla will have to make a decision that could betray everything she has ever known and loved.

NIGHTSHADE is unlike anything you have read before. Andrea Cremer has done an excellent job of constructing an unbalanced and unjust hierarchy that is at the core of this story. The world that that is presented is well layered and filled with many surprises that made me gasp along the way. This story also has a more mature edge to it while maintaining it's Young Adult tone as it dealt with many subjects that were hard to face. Calla proved to be an honest and worthy character that had a very difficult situation conquer and her actions were authentic and relateable. Also, I could not helped being drawn into the love triangle that occurs and the indecisiveness to whom Calla should stay with. I began the story having a clear choice but in the end it got all murky :).

NIGHTSHADE is a dark and passionate tale full of wicked twists and turns that will keep you wholly engaged and guessing until the very last word. I highly recommend it to those seeking a new adventure that will consume you.

Today I have the pleasure of hosting a unique Author Blog Tour featuring LAUREN BARATZ-LOGSTED. She is the author of many amazing novels, my favorite being CRAZY BEAUTIFUL and now she has a new YA novel that is being released next month named THE EDUCATION OF BET and I cannot wait to read it. So, come and join me today to see what Lauren has answered for my part of this great tour idea.

If your memory could be erased so that you could reread a book, What book would you choose ? And why?

Love in the Time of Cholera, by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It's about a man, a woman, and another man. It has everything: stunningly gorgeous writing, an exotic setting, fascinating characters, romance, comedy, drama, magic realism, and it's my favorite novel by a living author. I've read it many times but I would love to have again that opportunity of reading it for the first time. I originally read Love in the Time of Cholera over 22 years ago, when the U.S. translation was published in March 1988. Exactly a year later, I was in Florida vacationing on the beach with friends when I saw a woman reading the book. I asked her if it was her first time, and she said yes. I envied her.

Here are the other stops on the One Question Blog Tour:

June 10: Drea: Do you think a woman during this era could have truly done what Bet did? om http://bookblather.net/

June 14: A.S. King: Can you write me an itinerary of a typical writing day for you, and include your feelings about the best and worst parts of a normal day? http://dogfact9.blogspot.com/

Cover: Whimsically cute

REVIEW YYYY

Are you ready for a summer read that you can dive into? Well look no further, because FORGIVE MY FINS is a great read filled with land loving fun and under the sea excitement.

Terra Lynn Child's knows how to spin a tale with her new mermaid adventure that has just the right amount of whimsy, romance and danger to keep you guessing while your having a good chuckle.

FORGIVE MY FINS centers on Lily, a girl that is a mermaid-out-of-water..and it's no joke because she recently discovered that she is half human and is given a chance to experience life above sea level. Lily adapts well to her new life and even develops a crush on Brody the star swimmer and resident hunk at her high school. Life seems near perfect except for the constant teasing and unrelentless taunts from her next door neighbor Quince. Life would be swimmingly smooth if he would just disappear, but that is so not an option when a case of mistaken identity links them together and it only a King's order can change it. AHHHH!! What is a girl with fins to do? Lily obliges her father's wishes because she wants to prove that she is not a chicken of the sea, and as a result she comes to realize that her feelings towards Quince are changing. A fact that is hates...or does she? Only the sea will tell.

I truly enjoyed this new world and adventure that Tera Lynn Childs has created. FORGIVE MY FINS is full great moments: snarky lines, romance and breathtaking underwater splendor that is imaginatively vivid. I am also a huge fan of Quince and Lily because they had perfect romantic tension that made me want to keep reading more.

If you enjoyed OH. MY. GODS! and GODESS BOOT CAMP then you are sure to enjoy this new splash in the YA paranormal genre.

COVER LOVE!! New Beautiful Darkness cover

I have to admit that I am a cover girl, so to speak. If I am in a bookstore and see a gorgeous cover that catches my eye I make a beeline to get to it. That being said, If a series that I am reading has a so-so cover within it's series I will still buy it and read it, but I wouldn't be sitting there petting it saying "MY PRECIOUS, MY PRETTY" like I would with the new cover to BEAUTIFUL DARKNESS by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Check it out here

This is the old cover version, which is not bad but no where near as spooky and totally catching the feeling of the book as the new cover.

All this brings me to the question. How much do book covers influence your book buying? be honest. I know that a great cover gets my attention and it has been a swaying factor when I cannot make up my mind between books. Sometimes I win, sometimes I sorely loose.

INFINITE DAYS by Rebecca Maizel

Paperback: 320 pages
Publisher: St. Martin's Griffin (August 3, 2010)
Series: I soooo hope so
Cover: Gorgeous

REVIEW YYYYY

In our present literary world where vampire stories are commonplace and unexciting, it is refreshing...nay exhilarating to read a vampire novel as original and enthralling as INFINITE DAYS.

The magic behind this intoxicating story is Rebecca Maizel's mastery of creating a world filled with beauty and blood at the hands of young woman who desired to become human again.

INFINITE DAYS is the story of Lenah Beaudonte: a 592 years-old vampire that is forever imprisoned in the body of a teen girl. After many many years she becomes tired of the blood lust and she confides this longing for humanity to Rhode's her longtime confidant, lover, friend and sire. He grants her wish but at a terrible price to Lenah's heart and soul. Now, Lenah has to learn what it is to become a sixteen year-old girl in the 21st century after a long absence from the human world. She takes to this new challenge with trepidation and caution but is soon consumed by life. Then she encounters Justin, a boy that makes her radiate with joy and her whole new world comes into sharp focus and nothing could be better for her. But when you you have lived as long as Lenah you can have many friends and enemies and this is a fact that she is ever aware of and soon realizes that her past may come back to haunt her and her chance at true happiness.

INFINITE DAYS was an amazing story and I loved this evocatively rich story whose words pressed heavily upon me and lingered long after the last page was read. I became a champion for Lenah and her quest for a new life and I experienced it along with her because the story was realistically set, not forced or pretentious in any way. I enjoyed how Lenah's past would flow seamlessly into the present and how certain moments would take my breath away with an ache for what was lost and gained would utterly consume me.

In the first chapter alone I was filled with such emotions that I had tears and it was like WOW! now this is a book I would recommend to everyone and I am. You must order this book now or run to the bookstore when it comes out because you WILL NOT believe how good it is. I cannot wait to discuss this with everyone.
Thank you, Rebecca for making me fall in love with Vampire's all over again.

Favorite Line:

"Throughout all my histories, I found no one I loved more than you...no one."

Now, how can you resist this story after reading that line?

Series: Yes
Author Website: Sarah Rees Brennan

REVIEW YYYY

Mix Demon's and Magician's together then throw in a dose of desire, deceit and mystery and you have the most wicked adventure called the Demon's Covenant.

Sarah Rees Brennan did a marvelous job of continuing on with the adventures from the The Demon's Lexicon. From the very first page you are swept up into it's web of magic and are taken along for the bumpy ride until the very last word and are not disappointed.

In the Demon's Covenant the reluctant quartet of Mae, Jaime, Nick and Alan are brought together again when Jaime becomes mysteriously involved with Gerald the magician. Mae realizes that she is helpless against Gerald's lure over Jaime and calls upon Nick and Alan for help. The Ryves brothers come to the rescue and it becomes painfully apparent that Gerald has powers that are stronger than any of them could imagine. Together they try to figure out how to rescue Jaime from those that are suddenly interested in him and in the meantime Mae is torn between her attraction to broodingly handsome Nick and winsomely kind Alan. Yet, Mae will have to put those feelings aside as she tries to find the answers to help save her brother from the clutches of the obsidian circle before it's too late.

I absolutely adore and am fascinated by the world that Sarah has created with this series. It is original and spell binding for once you begin reading you cannot seem to stop. It's like your pulled into a magical web of intrigue and sultry moments that set your heart to racing. I did not think I could fall in love with the Ryves brothers any deeper and I was happily proven wrong. I was left with a deeper understanding as their character development was strongly presented. I also LOVED the fact that Mae was at the heart of this story and she proved that an ordinary girl could accomplish anything with the power of love on her side.
The Demon's Covenant is a must read for those following the series and if you have not started this series then you must. Simply put, it is brilliant

REVIEW YYYY

What happens when you combine faeries, demons, the shadow lands and a wicked scary prophecy? You get Nikki Donovan and her non-stop adventures of navigating life as a high school student while also being a demon princess.

With Demon Princess: Reign Check, Michelle Rowen continues her fabulous skills at keeping us glued to our books as we delve deeper into Nikki's role as a demon Princess and all of it's perks and downfalls.

Demon Princess: Reign Check continues shortly after Demon Princess: Reign or Shine ended. with Nikki and her mom (who is single again) maintaining their lives in the same manner, except that Nikki is really a demon Princess. It's a fact that she must keep secret from everyone, but she isn't the only one hiding some pertinent life-altering information. Yet, while trying her best to keep both her existence in both worlds in harmonious balance she receives some disturbing news that put her very existence in great peril. How is a girl supposed to enjoy being sixteen when everything around her is going demonically twisted?

I am so glad that that Michelle Rowen kept up with the adventure and humor factor from the series predecessor. I enjoyed reading about Nikki and her new adventures adjusting to life as a demon princess and thought the deeper world building a great asset to the storyline. I am a sucker for romance and Nikki and her share with her forbidden attachment to Michael and the inescapable attraction to Rhys, the young faery king. I am also a fan of the mystery involving both boys and how it all plays out...yummy.

The only thing that I had issues with is Nikki's BFF, Melinda and her storyline. I would have preferred a bit more of a surprise. Yet that was impossible because the story synopsis basically spilled the proverbial beans with all the information given on the back cover. BOOOO!!! Why do publishers do that? It's not like I did not have an inkling to what might be happening but I would have liked to find out on my own terms.

Demon Princess: Reign Check is a fantastic summer read that will give you just the right amount of paranormal romance and demonic adventure.

Waiting on Wednesday: THE MOCKINGJAY by Suzanne Collins

SPOILER!

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12.

AHHHH!!! the suspense is killing me. What do you read in the meantime???

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
