"I don't do patrols, I don't go hunting, I just stick close to you. You live your life. I'll keep you safe," Tamani said, sweeping a lock of hair from her face. "Or die trying."

Laurel hasn't seen Tamani since she begged him to let her go last year. Though her heart still aches, Laurel is confident that David was the right choice.

But just as life returns to normal, Laurel realizes that a hidden enemy lies in wait. Once again, Laurel must turn to Tamani to protect and guide her, for the danger that now threatens Avalon is one that no faerie thought would ever be possible. And for the first time, Laurel cannot be sure that her side will prevail.

My Thoughts

Upon finishing SPELLS by Aprilynne Pike last year I was left anticipating ILLUSIONS. I could not wait to find out how this trilogy was going to play out and then was surprised to realize that this book was not the series finale.

As I return to Lauren's world it is to find her finished with another summer in Avalon and beginning her senior year in high school. She and David are together and everything is fine but that all changes when Tamini suddenly appears. He explains that he is now her personal bodyguard and thus the love triangle returns with avengence. Yet having two boys volley for her affection is the least of Laurens problems when an old threat comes to her with a favor. Now Lauren and her friends find themselves on edge trying to unlock the new mystery before it's too late.

For those familiar with this series knows that Aprilynne has a different take on Faeries that are unique in conception and not seeped in traditional lore. It is these reasons that intrigued me and kept me coming back for more. Especially when a certain sentry has enamored of him. Yet, this time I felt as if some of it's initial magic was missing as the story slowly played out with little surprise and the love triangle between Lauren, Tamini and David felt over played.

If your a fan of the series then you would not want to miss this next installment, but it will leave you a bit frustrated. I am hopeful that with the next novel that all my questions are answered and that the initial magic returns.

I have to say the love triangle was starting to seriously wear on me as well. But the cliffhanger was huge, and now i'm dying to read the next instalment.
Although I can't find it anywhere, I know i heard at one point that this would be a quartet.

It's always been a quartet since the very beginning. I'm not sure where you got the trilogy idea from (though lots of paranormal series these days are trilogies, so maybe it was that?).

Anyway, I've only read Wings but have Spells and Illusions in my TBR pile. I really do need to get around to them because I really enjoyed Wings.

I would love to see what you have to say :)

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
