Review: The Iron Thorn by Caitlyn Kittredge

THE IRON THORN by Caitlyn Kittredge Excerpt: Here Reading level: Young Adult Hardcover: 512 pages Publisher: Delacorte Books for Young Readers (February 22, 2011) Language: English ISBN-10: 0385738293 Source: Audiobook (Audible) Rating: YYYYY

In the city of Lovecraft, the Proctors rule and a great Engine turns below the streets, grinding any resistance to their order to dust. The necrovirus is blamed for Lovecraft's epidemic of madness, for the strange and eldritch creatures that roam the streets after dark, and for everything that the city leaders deem Heretical—born of the belief in magic and witchcraft. And for Aoife Grayson, her time is growing shorter by the day.

Aoife Grayson's family is unique, in the worst way—every one of them, including her mother and her elder brother Conrad, has gone mad on their 16th birthday. And now, a ward of the state, and one of the only female students at the School of Engines, she is trying to pretend that her fate can be different.

My Thoughts

When I began reading THE IRON THORN by Caitlyn Kittredge I had no idea that I was embarking on an adventure that would totally captivate me and and leave me clamouring for more. An epic read that I want to read all over again.

Although The Iron Thorn is not my first venture into Steampunk literature it is by far my favorite. Among my many reasons for adoring this book is appreciating how Caitlyn was able to create a world with such imagination and precise descriptive narrative. She took well known paranormal figures and breathed new life into them as they appeared in this fascinating new landscape that was intriguing, original and made of awesome. Aoife Grayson is the protagonist in this dark tale and one of my favorite characters because she exhibits intelligence, inner strength and a vulnerability that makes her seem all the more believable. Yet, despite my admiration for Aoife, I must say that I have a huge crush on Dean and once you read this story you will understand why. He is just too wicked good for words and whenever he is around you are riveted to him and his interactions with Aoife always bring a smile on your face and leave you wanting more. Besides having characters that you will adore you will also have plenty to despise and I love that in a story and believe me you will have one character in particular that you will love to hate. My blood just boils thinking about it...grrrr.

One thing that I must say about this book is that it may seem a bit confusing to start off with, especially with the different terms used for items we are familiar with and for all the new things involved in this story. Stick with it, because it will all makes sense as you go along, because with any new world it takes a bit of time to absorb but you will enjoy and appreciate it.

The Iron Thorn has everything you could want in a epic read with high adventure, complex and engaging characters and a storyline unlike anything you have ever read before. Don't let its size intimidate you, because once you reach the end you will know it is not enough.

Great review--and I'm reading it next! I was just trying to decide what to read next (having just finished THE GATHERING by Kelley Armstrong, which I enjoyed). You've answered that question. Thanks!

I would love to see what you have to say :)

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
