Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.

My Thoughts: 

Lies Beneath by Anne Greenwood Brown is a wicked read, dark and eerie just like I prefer them. This tale of murderous mermaids has left me land locked and fearful of the entering any body of water any time soon and once you read this beautifully, dark romance you will understand why.


It was initially difficult to comprehend mermaids as being anything other than the spork lovin' little mermaid of Disney fantasy, but that difficulty quickly changed to admiration as I became deeper immersed within the depths of this book. Witnessing Calder White's inner struggle proved to be a delicious battle of good versus evil and then to see his ultimate transformation when he fell hook, line and sinker for Lily was worth every tension filled moment. Although I favored Calder I enjoyed every moment with his wicked sisters for I suspect that there is a darker motive lurking under their actions and I wanted to know more.

Lies Beneath is unlike any mermaid tale that I have read before and what this story may have lacked in action it was surely forgotten by eerie story telling at it's very best and with a cast of characters that you will not easily forget. This novel is a good book for those that enjoy their underwater reads tinged with a darker edge and a good dose of romance and intrigue.
