The IRON CODEX series is one of my absolute favorite reads and while I am sorry to see it end yet, at the same time I am excited to see what Caitlin Kittredge has in store for us next. Please stay a bit and get to know this author better as you read our interview. Then when your finished please enter my contest for a finished copy of THE MIRRORED SHARD.

THE MIRRORED SHARD Blog Tour
An interview with Caitlin Kittredge

Now that this series has come to an end, what will you miss most?

I'll definitely miss spending time with Aoife, Dean and the rest of the cast. They were a lot of fun to write. And I'll miss the world of the Iron Codex. I had such a wonderful time inventing it and I've spent days thinking about the creatures, the magic, the geography and every little detail, even things that never made it into the books. I think I will miss the richness of playing in the Iron Codex universe, but I look forward to creating something totally new, too.
If you had the sole power of selecting the dream cast for this series whom would you cast? and why?

This is a hard question! I always have many choices for Aoife and Dean. My original choice for Aoife was Emily Browning, who was in Sucker Punch and A Series of Unfortunate Events, but that was back in 2009 when I concieved the series. Now, I think Willa Holland, who plays Thea Queen on the CW show Arrow, would be a good choice, or Christa B. Allen, who's Charlotte Grayson on Revenge (also one of my favorite shows—so good!) Dean is harder—there's really nobody in Hollywood who embodies him just the way I pictured his character. I'd love to hear fan suggestions! For Tremaine, I'd want somebody spooky and inhuman...maybe someone like Hugo Weaving or even Tilda Swinton—I love the way she embodies monstrous creatures. For Draven, I decided Ian Somerhalder from Vampire Diaries would be a great pick—he's great at playing that handsome-but-untrustworthy type, which is totally Draven. And for Cal, I picked Kyle Gallner, who's been in a lot of stuff, most recently Beautiful Creatures.
Caitlin, your Steampunk/adventure YA Iron Codex series is a highly original and addictive read what inspired you to write this series?

Lots of stuff! I wanted to write steampunk, but there was so much set in Victorian England that I wanted to divorce it from all that. I knew I wanted a heavy magic component, too, since a lot of steampunk technically falls under the heading of science fiction and while I love the genre, I'm no good at writing it. Once I'd made those decisions, and decided to crib from the Lovecraft mythos a bit, everything else pretty much fell into place.
For readers that enjoy this series what other books would you recommend within the same genre?

I'd hightly recommend Cherie Priest's Clockwork Century novels, starting with Boneshaker, Scott Westerfeld's Leviathan and its sequels, and I think Gail Carriger has a steampunk series that's YA starting very soon, set in the same world as her Parasol Protectorate books.

Can you tell fans what you are working on next?

I'm working on a very exciting YA project, but I currently can't say anything except it's a modern-day set novel that's pretty different from Iron Codex, but still definitely fantasy. Hopefully I'll be able to reveal more soon!

I would love to see what you have to say :)

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
