The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door by Karen Finneyfrock
Hardcover, 272 pages
February 21st 2013 by Viking Children's
ISBN: 0670012750
Source: Publisher
Rating:  ♥♥♥

That’s the day the trouble started.
The trouble that nearly ruined my life.
The trouble that turned me Dark.
The trouble that begs me for revenge.

Celia Door enters her freshman year of high school with giant boots, dark eyeliner, and a thirst for revenge against Sandy Firestone, the girl who did something unspeakable to Celia last year.

But then Celia meets Drake, the cool new kid from New York City who entrusts her with his deepest, darkest secret. When Celia’s quest for justice threatens her relationship with Drake, she’s forced to decide which is sweeter: revenge or friendship.

HALEY'S REVIEW:

Remember in high school there was that one bully who you wanted revenge on? Well that is exactly what The Sweet Revenge of Celia Door is about. It's one of those stories were you know exactly how the character feels.

Celia Door better known as Celia the Dark, has no friends and writes poetry. Oh, and is out to take down Mandy the one who made her dark, with the most perfect, bitter sweet revenge imaginable. Until Celia meets Drake, an amazing, good looking boy who has just moved into town from New York City. Soon Celia discovers that for the first time she has a friend and the perfect pawn for her revenge. That is, until drake tells Celia his deepest darkest secret and Celia realizes how much Drake trusts her. Now she's torn between getting her revenge and keeping her only friend.

As any story about revenge goes,Celia's plan blows up in her face when Mandy steals her poetry notebook and hangs the poem about Drakes secret all over the school.  Celia is Crushed when Drake refuses to speak to her after the incident. When Celia finally gets drake to speak to her again, she finally tells Drake her deepest, and yes, darkest secret. She tells him everything about what Mandy has done to her and why she so badly wants revenge.

I am so impressed with Karen Finneyfrock for writing a story so well crafted that so many can relate to what Celia is going threw. I'm especially impressed because this is also her first novel. This book is a fun trip down memory lane and a chance to experience Celia's own story for revenge. Celia is defiantly one of those characters that you can relate to and feel like her story is your story too.

Waiting on Wednesday: VELVET by Em Garner

Jill over at Breaking the Spine started this and I believe that it's awesome" This blog post is to alert those that visit about "the" book that we cannot wait to get our hands on.

After the Contamination—an epidemic caused by the super-trendy diet drink SlimPro that turned ordinary citizens into violent, uncontrollable creatures—the government rounded up the “Connies” to protect the remaining population. Now, two years later, the rehabilitated are being allowed home, complete with shock collars that will either control, or kill, them.

Velvet Ellis has struggled to care for her ten-year-old sister since her parents were taken in the round up. When she finds her mother in one of the “Kennels,” Velvet resolves to do whatever it takes to put her family back together. But the danger isn’t over. It’s beginning all over again…

Gritty and grabbing, Velvet is a harrowing, emotionally charged novel for fans of Carrie Ryan and The Walking Dead.

"They keep them in cages. The unclaimed. Long rows of narrow, filthy cages lined up along dark corridors lit by bare, hanging bulbs. The corridors stink like disinfectant. It’s a harsh, burning smell that hurts the inside of my nose, but it’s better than the reek that wafts up from underneath the odor of cleanser. That smell’s something raw and meaty and moist, something sick. Like dirty wounds. Blood and other things." --quote from the first chapter, from Em Garner's website.

BLOG TOUR: Cinders & Sapphires by Leila Rasheed

If you are a fan of Downton Abbey like I am then you cannot pass up this fantastic new novel CINDERS & SAPPHIRES by Leila Rasheed. A fiery new protagonist, a forbidden love and unimaginable desires in a world where propriety and manners are everything. Please take a seat, sip some tea and have a scone as you read a sneak peek of this new novel and get to know the main character a bit better.

CINDERS & SAPPHIRES

Lady Ada Mary Edwina Aveline Averley is the elder daughter of Lord Edward Averley, Earl of Westlake, and the late Lady Mary Olivia Averley, Countess of Westlake. She was born seventeen years ago at Somerton Court. However, Ada has spent most of her life in India, which she considers home. Blessed with both great beauty and wealth, Ada’s return to England has sparked endless gossip about who she may marry, but Ada has little interest in balls, clothes, and engagements. She has what some consider an unhealthy interest in reading and politics. Her passion about women’s rights is particularly fierce and rather disconcerting to certain members of her circle, including her stepmother Lady Fiona Averley and stepsister Charlotte Templeton.  Ada is devoted to her father, who recently resigned from his post as Lieutenant Governor of Bengal amidst a great scandal that has followed Ada’s family all the way from India. She is equally devoted to her younger sister, Georgiana, whose delicate health requires Ada’s constant attention. Although the formalities society are tedious for someone of Ada’s intellect, she is a romantic at heart, and finds it trying to always be proper. In fact, she fears she is often the opposite of proper when it comes to love.

An Interview with ADA AVERLEY

· From the very beginning it is clear that YOU (Ada Averley) are an appealing and unconventional heroine for your time. Instead of being a proper lady your priority is to attend Oxford and become a journalist, why is that?
Sometimes I ask myself the same question. It isn’t easy to be out of step with your times. Perhaps I’m selfish to want to go to university even though I know my father disapproves. It certainly isn’t the attitude of a dutiful daughter. But I can’t lie to myself. I know that I have the intelligence and ability to make a difference in the world. Isn’t that what we all should do? Shouldn’t we try to make the world a better place?

· If you could become a journalist what would you like to write about?
I would like to expose injustice in British society. A decade into the twentieth century, modernity is rushing towards us at the speed of the automobile. And yet children still live in slums, disease and poverty steal hope from families. This is wrong.

· If you could go on any adventure without having to worry about your station in life, where would you like to go.?
I would like to go back to India. I still think of it as my home, in a way. I’d like to wander around and explore its many beauties.

· What made you fall for Ravi and do you think that you both could ever express your true intentions publicly?
Most men look at me and see a title. Others see a pretty face. Ravi is the first man I’ve ever met who saw me, Ada. Sadly, I don’t think we would ever be accepted as a couple by my family. If he were a maharajah, things might be different. But he can offer neither wealth nor status, and so my father would never accept him.

· What changes would you like to be a part of for the improvement of women's rights?
I want women to be able to take their place alongside men in every field of work. Therefore I would like to see the universities of Oxford and Cambridge award degrees formally to their female students.

· Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?
I hope I will be making a difference in some small way. And I hope I will be happy.

Tim Macbeth is a 17-year-old albino and a recent transfer to the prestigious Irving School, where the motto is, "Enter here to be and find a friend." Tim does not expect to find a friend; all he really wants to do is escape his senior year unnoticed. Despite his efforts to blend into the background, he finds himself falling for the quintessential "it" girl, Vanessa Sheller, girlfriend of Irving's most popular boy. To Tim's surprise, Vanessa is into him, too, and she can kiss her social status goodbye if anyone finds out. Tim and Vanessa enter into a clandestine relationship, but looming over them is the Tragedy Paper, Irving's version of a senior year thesis, assigned by the school's least forgiving teacher.

The story unfolds from two alternating viewpoints: Tim, the tragic, love-struck figure, and Duncan, a current senior, who uncovers the truth behind Tim and Vanessa's story and will consequently produce the greatest Tragedy Paper in Irving's history.

My Thoughts:

THE TRAGEDY PAPER by Elizabeth Laban is a good debut novel depicting a tale of heartbreak, longing and unfortunate circumstances. Told from two view points this story delves into the lives of Tim and Duncan, both students and both dreading the Tragedy paper that is catapulted their Irving school to legendary status. Yet, it is because of this paper that Tim's tragic story comes to light and Duncan must figure out what to do with it.

This story starts off well enough with Duncan inheriting a confession of storts from his room's previous tenant Tim. Duncan and Tim have nothing in common except the one night when their lives intersect thus forever changing them. At first Duncan is unsure of what he has inherited but as he begins to read more of Tim's story he becomes a bit obsessed and realizes that if he wants more in his life he has to be the instrument for that change and thus he begins on a journey that will bring forth good and bad events.  While you witness Duncan's metamorphosis you also witness the Tim's decline, his ultimate weakness and the night when his love for an all elusive girl goes horribly wrong. As both stories intertwine and reach their inevitable conclusion you are wound up so tight that you forget to breathe.

THE TRAGEDY PAPER does conclude in an open ended manner thus giving me the opportunity of hope. It is through this sliver of a portal that I imagine a resolution, a confession and change and although I suspect that will not happen it is always nice to know that it just might....

Set against the lush, magical backdrop of the Pacific Northwest, two inseparable
best friends who have grown up like sisters—the charismatic, mercurial, and
beautiful Aurora and the devoted, soulful, watchful narrator—find their bond challenged for the first time ever when a mysterious and gifted musician named Jack comes between them. Suddenly, each girl must decide what matters most: friendship, or love. What both girls don’t know is that the stakes are even higher than either of them could have imagined. They’re not the only ones who have noticed Jack’s gift; his music has awakened an ancient evil—and a world both above and below which may not be mythical at all. The real and the mystical; the romantic and the heartbreaking all begin to swirl together, carrying the two on journey that is both enthralling and terrifying.

For sixteen years, Alyssa Gardner has lived with the stigma of being descended from Alice Liddell -- the real life inspiration for Lewis Carroll's famed novel, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. But cruel jokes about dormice and tea parties can’t compare to the fact that Alyssa hears the whispers of bugs and flowers ... the same quirk which sent her mother to a mental institution years before.

When her mother takes a turn for the worse and the whispers grow too strong for Alyssa to bear, she seeks the origins of their family curse. A set of heirlooms and a moth tied to an eerie website lead Alyssa and her gorgeous best friend / secret crush, Jeb, down the rabbit hole into the real Wonderland, a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on.

There, creepy and violent counterparts of the original fairytale crew reveal the purpose for Alyssa’s journey, and unless she fixes the things her great-great-great grandmother Alice put wrong, Wonderland will have her head.

My Thoughts:

Every once in a while a book will come along that will completely surprise me, one that takes me to far away adventures with handsome boys and leave me breathless for more.

SPLINTERED by A.G. Howard is what a warped Alice in Wonderland retelling is all about. Dark and twisted this story follows Alyssa Gardner, the descendant for the Alice In Wonderland novel as she tries to safe her loved ones. Unfortunately this claim to fame is a sure ticket to insanity for her and her family. Then she is presented with a chance to correct the wrongs her descendants have made and free her mother and all she has to do is go down the rabbit hole.....

As you can imagine when Alyssa tumbles into wonderland it is not the stuff made of fairy tales and she soon realizes that she is in over her head. Yet, time is ticking away and her mother's fate lies in her hands. Now the adventure truly begins with Alyssa being given a multitude of tests to prove her worth. This is where I became entranced with the story. SPLINTERED is wholly original while sticking to a traditional roots, the characters of Alice in Wonderland come to life and this world is dark and frightening while dancing on the edges of romance. The writing in this novel is reminiscent of Melissa Marr's and Julie Kagawa's previous works and if you enjoy them then I know you will also enjoy this novel and not be disappointed.

Gripping original stories of dystopian worlds from nine New York Times bestselling authors, edited by Melissa Marr and Kelley Armstrong

The world is gone, destroyed by human, ecological, or supernatural causes. Survivors dodge chemical warfare and cruel gods; they travel the reaches of space and inhabit underground caverns. Their enemies are disease, corrupt corporations, and one another; their resources are few, and their courage is tested.

Powerful original dystopian tales from nine bestselling authors offer bleak insight, prophetic visions, and precious glimmers of light among the shards and ashes of a ruined world.

Stories from:
Kelley Armstrong, Rachel Caine, Kami Garcia, Nancy Holder, Melissa Marr, Beth Revis, Veronica Roth, Carrie Ryan, Margaret Stohl.
Haley's Review:

Shards & Ashes is a collection of 9 short stories. Each story has a strong main character who must achieve or overcome the challenges they are faced with in life. These 9 stories all take place in dark, futuristic, apocalyptic type worlds.

As unique as each story was they all seemed to have a similar theme. The theme being finding away to survive in a world that has seemed to turn against them. In one story the main character has to deal with betrayal and learn that the ones you think you can trust shouldn't always be trusted. In another story the main character lives in a place were children go missing daily. She never thinks it could happen to her or that the person they take is her little sister, and the only family she has left. Now she must find the people who took her and why, before it's to late. She discovers the hidden horrors of a life she thought she knew and learns just how disturbed and cruel the human mind can be.

These stories kept me at the edge of my seat and left me on my knee's begging for more long after the story ended. If I could have my way I would suggest to the authors that they expand these stories into hole books. I promise that once you open this book you will be hooked onto adventures with the characters and never want to leave.

“Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel like I've accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter. Reading gives me something to talk about later on. Reading is the unbelievably healthy way my attention deficit disorder medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape; it's a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up, and it's a way of making contact with someone else's imagination after a day that's all too real. Reading is grist. Reading is bliss.”
